RIDING LESSONS
Goal: To create a learning environment for young riders which allows a childhood passion to become a lifelong pleasure.
Style: Hunt seat equitation with emphasis on safety and horsemanship.
Attire: ASTM/SEI approved helmet Paddock boots or tall leather boots Long pants (jodphurs or breeches recommended) Jewelry should not be worn No shorts, no chaps
Cold weather attire: Layers of clothing ( e.g. long underwear, turtleneck, sweatshirt, polar fleece, vest) are much easier to ride in than a bulky coat. Gloves are a must- not mittens.
Rider's Responsibilities: Riders will be expected to tack their own horse once they have learned how. Each rider is responsible for cooling off and putting away their mount after the lesson. Expect this to take an additional 15-20 minutes in the winter and 30 to 40 minutes in the summer.
Cost: Riding school lessons on school horses are $140/month, payable at the first lesson of the month.
Group Size- Non-jumping lessons are limited to 5 riders. More advanced lessons may be larger and run slightly longer.
Length- Group lessons are approximately 1 hour long. In the event only 1 rider from a group is present the length will be shortened to 1/2 hour; 2 riders will ride 45 minutes.
Make-Up/Cancellation Policy- Lessons must be canceled at least 24 hours prior to their scheduled start in order to receive a make-up (exceptions will be made for emergencies). We only allow one make-up per month. We will do our best to schedule make-ups but cannot guarantee their availability. If you are planning an extended trip or will miss several lessons in a row, talk to your instructor about make-ups in advance. We will, in certain instances, allow you to pay by the lesson instead of by the month but we will not guarantee lesson openings if paying by the lesson. Paying by the month guarantees your spot. If we cancel lessons we guarantee a make-up. Make-ups cannot be accumulated and used in lieu of payment; make-ups will only be held in addition to a student's regular lesson.
Tack: students who own a saddle may use if for lessons on school horses provided it is suitable and fits both student and mount correctly. You will be responsible for tacking your mount.
Practicing: Practice rides on school horses are available on a limited basis by appointment at a rate of $20 per half hour. There is no jumping during a practice ride.
Carpools/Pickups/Siblings We will try to schedule lessons with carpools in mind if we are informed about them ahead of time. Riders are to be picked up promptly after lessons as we do not provide supervision. For obvious safety reasons, young children (ie siblings of lesson riders) are not allowed to play unsupervised in the barn area. Children are to be accompanied by an adult and are encouraged to play quietly on the front lawn or to sit at the table provided in the hallway.
